We are now taught to expect that we would find in our spouse a great lover, a best friend, a constant companion, a financial partner. All of those things that went into the old “good wife” are true, but she also has to be like the courtesan. She has to also be charming and entertaining — a wife and a courtesan together.
This is quite a Westcentric article. Surely African societies, for eg, were contemplating marriage a lot earlier than the ancient Greeks? What about other socieities during the Middle Ages or today? Kinda reminds me of an article I read a while back arguing ‘love’ was a quintessentially Christian notion because, ‘of course’, no one else had thought about it. But still an interesting read.
